Does being overweight cause bunions?

A recent study by researchers in Australia studied 151 patients presenting oestoarthritis (OA) in the metatarsophangeal joints MTP joint looking to see if certain factors including BMI (body mass index) age, gender and weight may be associated with the range of motion in their toes and the serverity of the oestoarthritis in flexibility of movement in their feet and big toe joint.

The results reported where that patients with a higher BMI had a higher rate of foot problems and those with OA in the MTP joint had an even higher risk of developing a bunion.

They reported that what ever the cause of the bunion deformity prevention was the best way of preventing mobility problems and stopping foot pain and bunion surgery should be avoided.
