Bunion Protector Reviews - Bunion Pain Expert

Bunion Protector Reviews,  By Mankyfeet

Here you will find my bunion protector reviews on the latest bunion protector podiatry products,  i have tried and tested these support with my patients and my customers are satisfied and have found these products to provide comfort and relief to the bunion joint.

1# Gel Lined Bunion Protector

Soft silicone gel bunion guards are the most recent invention to protect and correct bunion joints and hammer toes.  They work by shielding the bunion joint from friction and shoe pressure one side and the spreader section separates the two toes gently correcting the toes back to their normal position.  Great for normal work shoes and trainers but more awkward in open sandals and high heels.

****Tip ****  When buying gel bunion guards watch out for different quality levels of the silicone gel , ebay and amazon  sell bunion products cheaply but you will find on receipt of the products the gel to be thin and most likely rip after a few times of using the product.
Quality bunion protectors are made of a thicker consistency and will last for many month and can be washed and re worn over and over again.

2# Bunion Sleeve Fabric lined with silicone gel

Bunion sleeves are a immediate and comfortable relief for the bunion / hallux valgus joint.
Their unique design allows the big toe and (bunion joint) the be cushioned by soft silicone gel it sits just were you need it.  The mineral gel pad conforms to the bunion sitting snugly . The gel   prevents pressure , friction, corns, blisters and most important pain.  They are very comfortable to wear and sit discreetly underneath socks or stockings, i use Medishaw fabric gel bunion sleeves with my customers the only draw back is you get one but  they are well worth it, Silipos also have a bunion protector and comes as a pair they come in 4 sizes and are a good choice for feet who are active.

3# Bunion Patches Pads

An alternative to standard plasters and compeed gel lined plasters, bunion patches are shaped with the enlarged joint in mind and can be a perfect solution when the joint becomes a little inflamed or a corn begins to form.  They are perfect for a night out if you are wearing open shoes or slightly tight fitting the thin design will prevent friction and pressure on the joint but will only last the night.  Epitact patch for hallux valgus are the strongest pads i have found and the epithelium activ gel is the perfect choice for the sensitive bunion area.

Does being overweight cause bunions?

A recent study by researchers in Australia studied 151 patients presenting oestoarthritis (OA) in the metatarsophangeal joints MTP joint looking to see if certain factors including BMI (body mass index) age, gender and weight may be associated with the range of motion in their toes and the serverity of the oestoarthritis in flexibility of movement in their feet and big toe joint.

The results reported where that patients with a higher BMI had a higher rate of foot problems and those with OA in the MTP joint had an even higher risk of developing a bunion.

They reported that what ever the cause of the bunion deformity prevention was the best way of preventing mobility problems and stopping foot pain and bunion surgery should be avoided.

What are Bunions

Bunion Treatment – What are bunions?
So what are Bunions and why do they cause so much hassle.

For those interested in bunion treatment, you might wonder, “What are bunions”? Bunions (hallux valgus) are bony prominences on the outside edge of the big toe where the toe meets the main bones of the foot. Bunions are a combination of three medical conditions that include enlargement of soft tissue; deformities in foot bones, called hallux abducto valgus; and a third condition called metatarsus primus varus. The hallux condition is a rotated big toe that either pushes toward the second toe, sits on top of it, or beneath it. Metatarsus primus is where the bone in the foot connecting to the big toe, rotates outward. This is the hard bone you feel when you touch a bunion. Understanding the biomechanics behind their formation helps in bunion treatment

Bunion Treatment – What causes bunions?

Bunion treatment isenhanced by understand how they are caused. There are many reasons for bunions:

  • Hereditary – almost 70% of people with bunions have a family members with bunions
    • You do not inherit the bunion, itself
    • You inherit the foot structure leading to bunions
  • Bunions may be caused by high heels that force the big toe to collide into the tips of shoes
  • Wearing shoes that are too tight create conditions for bunion formation
  • Flat Feet
  • Arthritis
  • Poor foot biomechanics, such as over pronation (one of the primary causes)
  • Abnormal movements, including ballerinas who dance on their toes
  • Being a woman (bunions are more prominent in women)

Bunions And Hammer Toe Corns And Blisters Best Remedy

When you have a bunion forming or the aftermath of a bunion two factors always occur.
Corns and callous formation on the hammer toe joint and on the bunion joint.

These can become very painful and often will develop onto infection and pus formation on the joints making the joints even more painful then before.

To stop getting corns and callous on hammer toes the best solutions are....

  • Wear open shoes where the toe is exposed and no pressure is on the toe.
  • Use a spreader to separate the bunion from the hammer toe this will allow the toe to
    drop a little.
  • keep the callous well moisturised and prevent hard dry skin.
  • Avoid tight pointy shoes
  • Wear a toe wrap or toe support sleeve that slides over the toe joint preventing friction and pain from enclosed shoes.
  • When infected apply savlon dry spray 3 times a day (this is an iodine spray)
  • Try a toe crescent support these nifty supports are crescent shaped and hoop over the second toe they gently lift the toes including the hammer toe repositioning the toe back to its natural position.
Best solutions to prevent Bunion corns and callous.

  • Avoid tight closed shoes that create pressure on the bunion joint.
  • Wear open shoes and sandals which allow the bunion not be squashed.
  • Redness on bunions is the first sign of friction, continued friction will cause a blister or corn to develop, At this time stop wearing the pair of shoes causing the redness.
  • Wear a bunion shield or protector which are soft gel supports that sit comfortably over the bunion joint stopping corns and callous to form.
  • When a corn develops apply a  compeed plaster which are soft gel plasters that mould to the skin and once removed pulls the core of the corn out.
  • When hammer toes and bunion corns and callous are present the best solution is a 2 in 1 bunion protector and corrector which are a combination of a toe spreader and a bunion shield moulded in one support. These successfully stop friction and correct the bunion into its natural position allowing the hammer toe to sit correctly.
Bunion corns and Hammer toes callous and corns can be pretty nasty and very uncomfortable and for some surgery is the solution they choose but these simple podiatry orthotic supports do offer a pain free alternative to surgery and are very inexpensive solutions to stop corns and callous.

Bunions and big toe pain causes

Bunions And Big Toe Pain ( Hallux Valgus, Hallux Limitus)If you are suffering from big toe pain in the joint then you may be experiencing one of these big toe pain conditions.

1: Hallux Rigidus (arthritis in the big toe joint)
2: Hallux Limitus (stiffness in the big toe from pressure)
3: Bunions (enlarged joint on big toe)

We will now explain the conditions, what causes them and how to treat them, likley these big toe pain conditions can be self treated normally without any surgery but it is important to treat the pain as over time it will get worse and walking and standing will continue to become more painfull.

Cause Of Big Toe Pain

When we walk our natural walking gait our big toe joint should bend up 75` degrees just as out foot comes off the ground. But when it is prevented this is when big toe pain starts and develops worse over time.

A common cause of big toe pain is over pronation or flat feet is occurs when our ankles roll inwards and the foots natural position is prevented as and the bodies weight is not evenly distributed. This will prevent the big toe bending to 75` degrees and pushes the big toe into the floor and pain or bunions occur.

Self help treatments to prevent Bunions and Big Toe Pain

If you find your self suffering from Bunions and Big Toe Pain try our 10 step plan to stop bunion pain here you will learn how you can stop and prevent bunion pain using simple but effective treatments.

But you always have the option to seek further guidance from a local Foot Health Professional.

Left to their own devices big toe pain may develop into arthritis and severe stiffness in the joint so prevention is always the best treatment.
Bunions will only get bigger and more uncomfortable in footwear and usually causes a hammer toe on the second toe. Hallux limitus depending on your foot type and activities can be prevented with correct orthotics and supports to prevent arthritis occuring. Hallux Rigidus can be treated using non surgcal or medical solutions using bunion sleeves and joint creams.

Best Treatment For Big Toe Pain

As we said prevention and early assistance will make a big difference to your pain in the big toe. The goal is to support and relieve any pressure on the joint and protect against any further damage to the joint.

1: Orthotic insoles for Big Toe Pain these can be purchased online or a customed designed orthotic insole can be cast and moulded by a podiatrist. I recommend a regular orthotic insole to start with a) because its a good way to see if you can get on with insoles b)they are much cheaper than custom ones. Learn more about Orthotic insoles for big toe pain here

2: Gel Sleeves perfect for wearing in work and sport shoes and trainers, these are designed to slide over the foot and they have a gel lined support cushion that sits over the bunion joint stopping friction. These are great if you have to stand or walk alot at work and are discreet and washable.

3: Padding Simple but very effective way to protect the joint from blisters and corns and friction in footwear. Soft padding is applied on the joint which is self adhesive and can sit all day stopping pain over the joint.
If you suffer from arthritis or infected corns on bunion then i would recommend the gel lined patches for extra protection.

  • Being a woman (bunions are more prominent in women)
  • Bunion Treatment – What are the symptoms?
Being aware of the signs and symptoms of bunions helps to recognize and initiate bunion treatment in its early stages. Bunions may be mild, moderate or severe and they may (or may not) cause symptoms.
People with severe bunions don’t always experience pain People with mild bunions can suffer greatly. If you have pain on the outside of your big toe joint, swelling, redness, numbness, a large bump, pain in the second toe, pain while wearing shoes, pain during activities or numbness and decreased motion of the big toe, you might have a bunion. Bunions have a very distinctive look and if you’re not sure, look them up on the internet. It’s important to begin bunion treatment as soon as possible to reduce severity.
Bunion Treatment – How do you treat bunions?
Bunion treatment at home will not make the bunion go away but can lessen discomfort, allowing you to resume normal activities. The first step is to buy wider shoes, reducing the pressure on the bunion. Stretch shoes are useful and especially cutting the shoe (in an X manner) directly above the bunion. Additional remedies include wearing orthotics, icing the area, applying padding and toe spacers and taking medications such as NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti inflammatory drugs) such Advil, Aleve and ibuprofen (check with your GP). If these remedies do not alleviate discomfort, check with your doctor about physical therapy, cortisone injections and surgery. If time allows, one of the best bunion treatments is allowing the area to resting, giving it time to heal.
Bunion Treatment – How do you prevent bunions?
Bunion treatment begins with prevention. If you start to notice a bunion is forming, wear different shoes. Avoid tight shoes and high heels. Purchase extra wide shoes. Whenever possible, wear sandals or flip-flops or go bare foot to take the pressure off the bunion. If you stop the bunion at its onset, additional bunion treatment may not be necessary.
Bunion Treatment – When to call your GP
Call for an appointment with your doctor if the bunion:
    · Causes pain even after you’ve switched to wider shoes
    · Prevents normal activities
    · Shows signs of infection or a wound begins to form
If you have diabetes, call your doctor immediately at the first sign of infection or wound formation. Foot infections and wounds are extremely serious in diabetics. Don’t delay in seeking bunion treatment for infection in your feet.
